Why Joining a Sorority Was One of the Best Decisions of my Life

Four (almost five), years ago, I moved away from home for the first time and started my journey as a university student. I remember those first few days of being away from home, it was terrifying and exciting all at the same time. I remember meeting so many different people, and not having a single clue whether or not I was going to end up in a friend circle with any of them. Quite honestly though, this whole cycle continued throughout my first year, and it wasn't until my second year that I finally felt like I belonged somewhere. 

Second year of university was kind of a big deal. It was the year that 9 amazing individuals (including myself), decided that we should start a sorority and become something big on our campus. I couldn't believe how quickly we all came together, and hustled, in order to make this whole thing work. The entire process was long and hard, and it wasn't until the very end of that school year that we finally found an organization that believed in our dream. 

Alpha Pi Phi, or should I say the greatest sisterhood on the planet, welcomed us with open arms, and allowed the 9 of us to start our very own chapter in Orillia, Ontario. It's been almost two years now since we've founded the Epsilon chapter, and I really just can't put into words how much my life has changed for the better since becoming a sister of this sorority. I guess I'll try my best though, because if any of you out there are thinking of joining a sorority in the future, I can only hope that this post will convince you to do so! 

1. You can be yourself, because no matter what, sisters are sisters, and they'll love you through and through.

This couldn't be more true. I'm probably the quirkiest human being that most of my sisters have ever met, but they put up with it and sometimes they even join me on my weird escapades *cough* ComiCon *cough*. Oh, and sometimes they even end up loving my nerdy interests just as much as I do!

2. Even if it's 3am and everyone is asleep, you can belt out a musical number and you'll have a whole broadway show of sisters backing you up in no time. 

Sorority girls are always down for fun. Time doesn't exist in our world, but if we need to be technical here, it's 5 o'clock somewhere right? 

3. School ain't no joke.

Ok sorry, I didn't mean to sound like someone's parent. What I'm trying to say here is, you're bound to have a sister who's taken the class that you're currently dying through, and she'll have no problem helping you ace that essay and kill those exams! 

4. Your community will love you.

Since philanthropy is such a huge part of being in a sorority, you get to know your local charities quite well, and for that, you will forever have an awesome rep in your city. 

5. Endless amounts of accessories, apparel, and just plain "things".

There's this thing called a "paddle, it's a big deal, and whoever has the most is always winning at life. You end up racking in so much stuff with your letters on it that you won't know what to do with it. 

6. You will always have someone there for you, no matter how alone you may feel.

Ok but seriously, no matter how alone you may feel, you'll always have a sister who will be willing to buy and eat a whole tub of Ben and Jerry's ice cream with you, regardless of the time, and with no reason required.

I could go on, but I figure those 6 are just the absolute cherry on top. So there you have it, some of the main reasons why being in a sorority, and having amazing sisters is positively life-changing.
